Doing

From rolling onto his back, to pushing himself up from the floor, your baby is steadily gaining more control of his upper body.

Babies develop their muscle strength from head to toe, with the help of plenty of nutrients. Before your baby can crawl later in life he must first be able to hold his head up and sit without toppling over.

Help your baby develop

At this stage you’ll notice the little muscles in your baby’s neck, shoulder and chest gradually developing to give your baby the strength he needs. As your baby gets more active you can expect plenty of wriggling and rolling during nappy changes!

It’s a good idea to move the changing mat down onto the floor, and never to leave your baby alone for any length of time.

Make some time for play on the floor. Place your baby on his tummy and encourage him to stretch for toys that are slightly out of his reach.

This will give him plenty of opportunities to show off his first roll over and strengthen his muscles too!

From 4 months, when your baby is strong enough to support his neck, try feeding him from your lap with one hand, while supporting his back with the other. Towards the end of this stage, your baby’s back will become much stronger, so try propping him up in a chair at mealtimes, with some soft cushions for support.
