Your baby’s tastebuds are now well developed and he can now taste the sweetness of your amniotic fluid. Well before he’s born your baby will like sweet tastes, which give him a calm and comforting feeling. Developing fast, his hearing is now sensitive enough to pick-up sounds that are too high or too low for adults to hear. He’s also added about another centimetre of growth in the last week – your baby now measures around 19 or 20cm.
It would be all too easy to add the extra calories you need during pregnancy by snacking on an extra packet of crisps (or three!), but this won’t give your baby the essential nutrients that will keep him growing.
Instead, focus on adding extra fruit and vegetables, choose wholegrain cereals and breads and meet your daily need for calcium by including low fat dairy foods in your daily diet.
You can get the fibre you need by choosing wholemeal or wholegrain food where possible. Bran alone isn’t recommended as it has few of the nutrients of the wholegrain and may reduce your absorption of important minerals like iron, calcium and zinc.
