The part of your baby’s brain that controls his senses is developing fast. And his heartbeat can easily be detected now. At the same time your baby’s skin is secreting a thick white mucus called vernix which acts as a waterproof barrier to protect his skin when he is born. Your baby now measures about 22cm from head to toe.
Gestational diabetes occurs only during pregnancy, affecting the way your body uses glucose, resulting in high levels of blood sugar. It can cause problems for you and your baby if untreated, but your doctor will devise a plan to keep your blood sugar controlled.
Although most women don’t show signs of this type of diabetes, your doctor will screen you regularly for sugar in your urine. Women considered at higher risk have a screening test done around 28 weeks. If you’re affected, you can control the symptoms with a combination of healthy eating and regular exercise, though some women also need to take medication. A bigger baby is one result of this condition, which generally doesn’t persist after the birth.
