Pregnancy - 31

Your baby

Your baby is about 41cm long and starting to pile on weight – now weighing about 3lb 3oz. The parts of his brain responsible for memory are starting to develop. But how do we know? One study found that babies who were played the theme tune to a popular soap opera while in the womb responded to it after birth, unlike those babies who hadn’t heard it before birth. We bet you’ll never watch Eastenders in the same way again…

As your body deals with an increasingly large baby, you’ll sweat and urinate more than before – needing to replace lost fluids is still very important as you enter the late stages of pregnancy.

Try to sip on drinks during the day and don’t wait until you feel thirsty – often this is a sign that you’re already a little dehydrated. Choose water, fruit juice, milk and smoothies and steer clear of too much tea and coffee.

Caffeine isn’t a healthy choice during pregnancy – it may cross the placenta and cause an increase in your baby’s heart rate. More than two cups a day can bring about this reaction in your baby, and more than five cups of coffee a day may actually lower your baby’s birth weight.
