Pregnancy - 34

Your baby

Not long to go now! With only about six or so weeks left on the clock, your growing baby measures-up at 45cm and weighs-in at about 4lb 6oz. His skin is really starting to thicken with a layer of fat stored beneath for insulation and nourishment. Antibodies to provide immunity against disease are continuing to be received from you, strengthening and preparing him for life outside the womb.

As your baby could be on the way soon, you should start to think about what to pack for the hospital – so here’s a useful list, especially for first time mums. You might want to think about packing:

  • Your antenatal notes
  • Your birth plan
  • Magazines, books, MP3 player, games, sudoku, playing cards, or crosswords… as you may have a bit of a wait on your hands!
  • Your favourite healthy snacks and drinks for you and your partner
  • Glucose tablets or boiled sweets
  • Nightdresses with front opening; loose and comfortable to give birth in
  • Several sets of underwear
  • Nursing bras
  • Breast pads
  • Lip balm
  • Dark coloured towels
  • All your usual toiletries
  • Hair bands
  • A watch with a second hand to time your contractions
  • Pictures of someone or something you love. This can provide great inspiration!
  • A stills camera, and or a video camera and accessories (get your partner to sort this)
  • A notepad and pen
  • Mobile phone and charger, although remember they should be switched off inside the hospital
  • Change or a phone card in case you need to use a public phone
  • Your phone book or a list of important numbers to call with the news

And don’t forget things for baby!

  • Nappies
  • Cotton wool
  • Vests
  • Sleep suits
  • Cardigan
  • Scratch mittens
  • Cotton hat
  • Towel
  • Blanket
