Your baby

What a journey it’s been, but you may be surprised to know that 95% of babies don’t arrive on their due date.

At birth, the average baby weighs around 7lb 7oz and measures 51cm from head to toe. Inside, there’s no spare room, so your baby can only move from side to side because it’s so cramped.

Over the last 9 months, your baby has developed from one cell to a little human made up of over 200 million cells, weighing over 6 billion times more.

Your varicose veins, if you have them, might get more pronounced as the hormone progesterone relaxes the blood vessels. There’s also more weight on your legs and more blood circulating in your body.

There’s a bit of good news so late in your pregnancy – once your baby’s head has engaged, you’ll feel less breathless because your lungs will be less pressured by your baby’s body.

You’ll be looking out for the classic signs of labour – some ‘show’ from your vagina, the mucus plug coming away and the onset of contractions. Once your waters break, you’ll be well and truly on your way…

Good luck from all of us at Cow & Gate… we’re always here if you need us!
