Key Nutrients

Certain nutrients play particularly important roles in your baby’s development during pregnancy. To find out more about each one, simply click on the nutrients you are interested in.

Folic Acid

Folic acid helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. This vitamin is most important in the months coming up to pregnancy right up to the end of the first trimester. During this period, it’s important that you are eating a healthy balanced diet and you are also taking folic acid supplements. You can also include folic acid rich foods in your diet such as green vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, beans and peas; and fruits such as oranges.

Did you know? - The iron from cereals and vegetables is best absorbed by your body if you eat some fruit or vegetables rich in vitamin C at the same time. Have a glass of orange juice with your breakfast cereal, take fresh fruit as a starter to your main course, or try a tasty tomato sandwich on wholegrain bread for a healthy snack.
