What to avoid

Salt remains the enemy, even as your baby becomes a toddler. So avoid adding it whenever you're cooking and don't add it at the table.

Try to steer clear of packet soups, packet sauces, stock cubes and other processed foods as they're often very rich in salt.

Avoid fizzy drinks, too, and limit unhealthy snacks like sweets and crisps that are high in calories but low in nutrients. These tend to fill up your toddler's small tummy, spoiling his appetite for healthier food.

Tea and coffee aren't suitable for young toddlers as they contain tannins, which reduce your baby's ability to absorb iron, a vital nutrient at this stage.

You should avoid giving whole nuts to the under-fives because of the risk of choking. But there's a delicious alternative: try offering peanut butter on fingers of toast as healthy, nutritious finger food.
