Choosing Childcare

Share this article:

If you are planning to go back to work you have some important decisions to make. Childcare is one of the biggest costs of having a baby and has an effect on the welfare of your child [link to budget for baby article], so you need to make sure you get it right. If you are fortunate enough to have a willing grandparent or other close relation, then you don’t need to worry about it too much. But if you want a place in a crèche or to hire a childminder, then it’s best to start thinking about it as soon as you can - the best crèches and most experienced childminders are booked up well in advance.

Which childcare is best for your child depends on a number of factors, such as your child’s age, whether you need full or part-time care, your budget and the services available where you live. The website www.citizensinformation.ie has a comprehensive guide on childcare, including laws and regulations. As a rule of thumb, full daycare is provided by nurseries and crèches. If you need partial childcare you have more options, such as Montessori groups, Naíonraí and playschools. If you’d rather have one-to-one childcare, then you need to opt for a childminder. Once your child is four years old and attending school, there are breakfast clubs, after school clubs, summer camps, etc. If you are on a low income, you can access community childcare, which is more affordable. The cost of childcare depends on the type you choose, the hours and the level of staff training. When your child is of preschool age, you are entitled to a year of free Montessori / playgroup from 9-12noon each day. When your child reaches the age of 3-4, do check in your area to see where this is available.

If you can, ask friends and relatives for recommendations or you can contact your local City/County Childcare Committee, which has a list of childcare providers. Public health nurses also offer this kind of information. Providers are required to offer a good level of childcare by law. Rules and regulations establish the ratio of adults to number of children, while health and safety rules need to be observed at all times. Premises should be spacious, well maintained, clean and suitable for purpose. Outdoor areas should be made secure by fences and gates and have safe play equipment.

Breastfeeding is best for your baby and provides many benefits. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding.

Introducing partial bottle-feeding could negatively affect breastfeeding and a decision not to breastfeed is difficult to reverse. Infant Milk Formula should only be used on the advice of a health professional and the manufacturer's instructions for use should be followed carefully. Improper use of an infant milk or innappropriate foods or feeding methods may present a health hazard. The social and financial implications of using infant milks should be taken into consideration. If you choose to bottlefeed, do not allow prolonged or frequent contact of milk feeds with your baby's teeth since this increases the risk of tooth decay. Make sure your baby's teeth are cleaned after the last feed at night.
