Once a baby is crawling they may start getting up to mischief and finding themselves in situations which may put them in harm’s way.
What you need to do now is concentrate on nurturing their sense of wonder and adventure as they learn about their new world, whilst ensuring his/her safety. If you have thoroughly child proofed your home, this shouldn’t be too difficult a task - you won’t have to explain to your baby why they can’t crawl up or down the stairs if you have the stair gate closed.
Children will understand your tone of voice if you say ‘no, don’t touch’ or ‘hot’ in a firm but gentle way and repetition and explanation will help them to figure out what behaviours are allowed and which are discouraged. However, it will be some time before you can expect your toddler to understand and obey your instructions on every occasion. Encouragement and positive reinforcement for good behaviour will help your child to learn right from wrong.
