Hi there,

Moving baby to their own cot or own room is something that every mum goes through and everyone has their own tips and tricks that worked for them.

The fact that he now sleeps the full night and no longer seems to need to holding him is a good sign that he is ready to move into his own cot.

There are a few different things you can try. Firstly, would be to try moving him into his cot after he has fallen asleep. When he wakes up he will be in his new cot and will gradually get used to it. However, some babies can get a little upset as they are in a different place to where they went to sleep.

You could try putting him down to sleep in his cot as well. It may take longer for him to get to sleep but once he gets into the pattern of getting himself to sleep by himself in this new environment, it will become routine for him. Depending on his reaction, you may need to sit on the floor beside his cot while he is falling asleep. This is fine as knowing you are there will be a comfort to him but try not to reach into the cot or speak to him as this could become something he requires to get to sleep. Then slowing move closer and closer to the door each night and eventually he will not need you to be there anymore.

Trying nap time in his cot can be a good way of getting him used to this new environment.

If you would like more specific tips for you situation feel free to give us a call on our freephone number 1800 570 570 and one of our advisors can get some more information and talk you through it.

Developing a new sleep routine is difficult so go at your pace but in the long run it will be better for both of you.

Best of luck,
Brenda

Breastfeeding is best for your baby and provides many benefits. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding.

Introducing partial bottle-feeding could negatively affect breastfeeding and a decision not to breastfeed is difficult to reverse. Infant Milk Formula should only be used on the advice of a health professional and the manufacturer's instructions for use should be followed carefully. Improper use of an infant milk or innappropriate foods or feeding methods may present a health hazard. The social and financial implications of using infant milks should be taken into consideration. If you choose to bottlefeed, do not allow prolonged or frequent contact of milk feeds with your baby's teeth since this increases the risk of tooth decay. Make sure your baby's teeth are cleaned after the last feed at night.
