Heartburn is a burning pain in your chest caused by stomach acid leaking out into your gullet (oesophagus). Other symptoms include an acid taste at the back of your throat, food regurgitation, burping, a difficulty swallowing food and coughing.
Symptoms can worsen when you are bending or lying flat. But don’t worry too much, heartburn can be treated and eased by:
- Avoiding eating and drinking for a few hours before bedtime, especially spicy foods
- Sleeping well propped up – use plenty of pillows
- Drinking a glass of milk – have one handy at your bedside in case you wake up with heartburn. Discuss your symptoms with your midwife and don’t be tempted to take antacid remedies unless they are safe for pregnant women.
