Antenatal classes, also known as parentcraft classes, cover fetal development (how your unborn baby grows), emotional and physical changes in pregnancy, pregnancy wellbeing (exercise and nutrition), relaxation, labour positions, breathing techniques, pain relief options, breastfeeding, baby care and postnatal wellbeing.
Some hospitals charge for the classes, but they are usually free. Check if your partner is welcome to attend the classes before you attend. In some areas classes are held in community venues – these are organised by midwives or independent organisations (charities such as Cuidiú or private operators).
You will generally attend antenatal classes from around 30 weeks, but you need to book them well in advance. On average, courses include four to six classes, each one lasting up to two hours. Some hospitals even offer Saturday classes.
