Sleeping problems

Share this article:

Your toddlers sleep is so important as you no doubt already know. A lack of sleep causes your child to not eat properly, become very irritable and generally cause you concern and stress. Be consoled by the fact that most toddlers go through phases of not sleeping well but they are just phases and can be helped.

  1. Shorten his nap or remove it all together.
  2. Ensure your child gets at least 30 minutes of activity / exercise per day, preferably out doors and in the afternoon.
  3. Avoid TV, scary stories and any other stimuli before going to bed.
  4. Try to avoid bringing your toddler into your bed and if they come to your room during the night simply escort them back to their own bed without speaking too much to them.
  5. Use a night light and try to avoid a bedside lamp or strong lighting. If they get up to use the bathroom at night there should only be minimal light used to get them to the bathroom and back.
  6. If possible let your child wake up with natural light from the window as it stabilises sleep rhythms and will put him in a better mood when he wakes up.
  7. Keep your child's bedroom at about 23-24 degrees Celsius for sleeping.
  8. Avoid television or game consoles in your child's room.
  9. Keep a regular sleep routine.

Breastfeeding is best for your baby and provides many benefits. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding.

Introducing partial bottle-feeding could negatively affect breastfeeding and a decision not to breastfeed is difficult to reverse. Infant Milk Formula should only be used on the advice of a health professional and the manufacturer's instructions for use should be followed carefully. Improper use of an infant milk or innappropriate foods or feeding methods may present a health hazard. The social and financial implications of using infant milks should be taken into consideration. If you choose to bottlefeed, do not allow prolonged or frequent contact of milk feeds with your baby's teeth since this increases the risk of tooth decay. Make sure your baby's teeth are cleaned after the last feed at night.
