Your toddlers health

Share this article:

It is part of the job of being a parent - worrying that is! All parents do it from time to time about a whole range of baby issues - sleeping, feeding, weight gain, weaning ..the list goes on! And now that you have survived the first year and have a growing toddler on your hands, health and developmental milestones can still be a worry now and then.

Is your toddler walking and jumping? Is he speaking yet? Is he sleeping in his own bed? Has he had all of his vaccinations?  And of course, if you compare him to other children you will always find someone who has more words, can run rather than walk and never climbs out of bed at night!

Be reassured that all children will develop at their own pace within a range of guideline ages and milestones.  Try not to compare him to his friends in the creche or his cousins who come to visit! If you are concerned, have a chat with your healthcare professional who can check out any worry you may have.

Breastfeeding is best for your baby and provides many benefits. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding.

Introducing partial bottle-feeding could negatively affect breastfeeding and a decision not to breastfeed is difficult to reverse. Infant Milk Formula should only be used on the advice of a health professional and the manufacturer's instructions for use should be followed carefully. Improper use of an infant milk or innappropriate foods or feeding methods may present a health hazard. The social and financial implications of using infant milks should be taken into consideration. If you choose to bottlefeed, do not allow prolonged or frequent contact of milk feeds with your baby's teeth since this increases the risk of tooth decay. Make sure your baby's teeth are cleaned after the last feed at night.
